One System…… Two Systems ….. ISO 9001 and EFQM Excellence Model By Dr. Abdelkarim Darwish

ISO 9001  and the  EFQM model, both are separately considered as a single system based on the overall vision of the institutional work, ISO 9001 is a global standard for quality management system aimed at providing products and services that achieve customer satisfaction and meet his or her expectations, and the standard states that "the organization must establish, document and maintain a quality management system and continuously improve its effectiveness in accordance with the requirements contained in this international standard." ([1])

The EFQM – of the European Foundation for Quality Management – is also a system that aims to "... The appropriate use of EFQM's Excellence Model with RADAR logic and key concepts ensures that all management practices used by any organization are integrated into a tight system that is continuously improved and achieves the desired strategy of that organization." ([2])

The common or most common perception is to look at them as different, but here I want to highlight and transfer this perception to another perception, which is that they are complementary and reinforcing - their application in an integrated manner - each other, if we consider that both help the organization to achieve its strategy or policy and associated goals, for example, the quality management system - ISO 9001 - helps the organization to identify product or service requirements and work to achieve them effectively and efficiently, The excellence model also helps to identify the needs of all stakeholders and work to meet them or exceed the expectations of all those involved.

From this standpoint, it is better for those concerned with achieving quality and institutional excellence to work in a systematic and integrated manner from the beginning and adopt both the quality management system "ISO 9001" and the institutional excellence model EFQM institutionally in accordance with the principle of working smarter and not by exerting more effort.
